Vanity Top Sizing Guide: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit

Getting the Right Measurements

A vanity top that fits perfectly transforms a bathroom. One that is too wide, too narrow, or the wrong depth creates headaches during installation and compromises the finished look. Whether you are a homeowner tackling a remodel or a contractor specifying for a multi-unit project, getting accurate measurements before ordering is essential.

This guide walks you through every measurement you need to specify the correct cultured marble vanity top for your project.

Step-by-step guide to measuring for cultured marble vanity tops — widths, depths, bowl cutouts, and how to choose the right size for your project.

Step 1: Measure the Width

Width is the most critical measurement. Measure the total width of your vanity cabinet from outside edge to outside edge.

  • Measure at the front of the cabinet, where the vanity top will sit.
  • If the vanity is against a wall on one or both sides, measure the space between walls at the countertop height, then subtract 1/8" for clearance on each wall side.
  • For freestanding vanities (not wall-to-wall), the vanity top typically overhangs the cabinet by 1/2" to 1" on each side.

ARSTAR produces vanity tops in standard widths of 25", 31", 37", 43", 49", 61", and 73". These cover the vast majority of standard vanity cabinet sizes. If your cabinet falls between standard sizes, always round up to the next available width or contact us about custom sizing.

Step 2: Choose Your Depth

Depth is measured from the front edge of the vanity top to the back (wall) edge. ARSTAR offers two standard depths:

  • 22" depth: The standard for most residential and commercial bathrooms. Provides ample counter space around the bowl and works with standard vanity cabinets.
  • 19" depth: Designed for compact bathrooms, powder rooms, and tight spaces where every inch matters. The reduced depth does not sacrifice bowl size — only the counter area behind and beside the bowl is slightly smaller.

When to Choose 19" Depth

The 19" depth option is ideal for:

  • Powder rooms and half-baths with limited floor space
  • Bathrooms where the door swing conflicts with a 22"-deep vanity
  • ADA-compliant installations that require specific clearances
  • Apartment and multifamily bathrooms designed for space efficiency

Step 3: Single vs. Double Bowl Configuration

For wider vanity tops (49" and above), you have the option of a single bowl or double bowl configuration:

  • Single bowl: Maximizes counter space. Ideal for master bathrooms used primarily by one person, or for designs that prioritize a clean, minimalist look.
  • Double bowl: Essential for shared bathrooms where two people use the vanity simultaneously. Available on 49", 61", and 73" tops.

When specifying a double bowl, note the center-to-center distance between bowls and ensure it aligns with your plumbing rough-in.

Step 4: Understand Bowl Types and Cutout Measurements

ARSTAR vanity tops are available with three bowl configurations:

Integral Bowls

The bowl is cast as part of the vanity top — one seamless piece with no joints or seams. This is the most popular option for cultured marble because it eliminates the countertop-to-sink seam where grime and bacteria can accumulate. No additional cutout measurements are needed since the bowl is built in.

Drop-In (Self-Rimming) Sinks

The vanity top is produced with a cutout, and a separate sink drops in from above. The sink's rim sits on top of the countertop surface. You will need to specify the cutout dimensions based on the sink manufacturer's template — typically the outer rim dimensions minus 1/4" on each side.

Undermount Sinks

The vanity top is produced with a cutout, and a separate sink is mounted from beneath. This creates a clean, flush look where the countertop edge is visible around the cutout. Undermount cutouts require precise measurements from the sink manufacturer's specification sheet. For more on choosing between these options, see our integral bowl vs. undermount comparison.

Step 5: Backsplash Considerations

Most cultured marble vanity tops include a 4" backsplash along the back edge and optional side splashes for wall-to-wall installations. When measuring:

  • Confirm whether your installation needs a backsplash (most do)
  • Note if you need side splashes (left, right, or both) for vanities that fit between walls
  • Check for electrical outlets or light switches that may interfere with the backsplash height

Step 6: Faucet Hole Specifications

Verify your faucet configuration before ordering:

  • Single-hole: For modern single-handle faucets — one centered hole.
  • 4" centerset: Three holes on 4" centers — the most common configuration for standard two-handle faucets.
  • 8" widespread: Three holes on 8" centers — for larger, upscale two-handle faucets.
